Updated source and executables are available from the SCALE website (http://www.ornl.gov/scale) for many of the modules in this package. Please check this site and download all available updated modules that you will be running. Information on SCALE-5, which is currently scheduled for release in late 2003, is also available there. Both Unix and Windows versions are distributed with this package on separate CD's. The included documentation is distributed in (PDF) electronic form. See the README.DOC for PC and READUNIX.TXT files on the CD-ROM for installation instructions and details on package contents. CSPAN, Visual Heating, and the ORIGEN-ARP input processor are distributed only on the CD-ROM for PC users. These utilities run only on PC and prepare input which can be uploaded to Unix systems. These utilities will be created by the installation procedure for Windows users. GNU software is available free of charge as gzip-x.xx.tar from the Free Software Foundation, 657 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge, MA 02139 or via anonymous FTP from pub/gnu at prep.ai.mit.edu. The gunzip utility is required to expand the tar file. About 650 MB is required to build the system and execute sample cases on Unix. The Unix version of SCALE4.4a was tested on the following systems: IBM 43P-260 running AIX 4.3.3 with XLF90 6.1 and XL C 4.4 IBM RS/6000 590 AIX 4.2.1 using XLF and XLF90 5.1.1.0 and C version 4.3 DEC/Alpha 500au Digital Unix 4.0D with Fortran90 5.1-8, Fortran90 V5.1-594 & C5.6-075 SUN UltraSparc 60 under SunOS 5.6 using f90 5, Fortran 90 2 and C version 5.0 HP B1000 under HP-UX B.10.20 using Fortran90 compiler, version 1.0 and ANSI C compiler SGI IRIX 6.5.5 with MIPSPro Fortran 90 7.3 and MIPSPro C 7.3 Pentium RedHat Linux 6.1 with The Portland Group, Inc. (PGI) PGF90 3.1-3 & gcc egcs-2.91.66 Some problems were unresolved at the time of the release. On SGI there were problems with test cases for PICTURE, HEATING1 and 1A and KENO-VI case 23. Under Linux the PBM files were not successfully installed. The ORIGEN-ARP shortcut in Windows is obsolete and should be deleted. A new OrigenArp for Windows version (including OPUS and PlotOPUS for plotting results) should be downloaded from the SCALE web site. The SCALE4.4a PC version requires 500 MB of disk space and a minimum of 32MB RAM. It was tested on Pentium PC's running Windows95, WindowsNT 4.0, Windows98 and Windows2000. Workstation version: includes source codes, BCD and binary data libraries, makefiles, scripts, and sample problem input and output, transmitted in a GNU compressed tar file. Executables created with the the PGI f90 compiler are included for Linux users. PC Version: contains source codes, executables, binary data libraries, makefiles, batch files, and sample problem input and output; written in DOS self-extracting compressed files. This distribution includes the following codes: aim, ajax, ale, alpo, arp, arplib, awl, bonami, c5toc6, compoz, corectol, couple, csas, csas6, genwgts, gwas, h7map, h7monitor, h7tec, heating, htas1, ice, k5tok6, kenova, kenovi, kmart, lava, legend, mal, malocs, morse, nitawl, ocular, origen, osbico, osbire, perfume, picture, prism, qadcggp, qads, q0rdpn, rade, sas1, sas2, sas3, sas4, wax, wgt, xsdose, xsdrn, xseclist & the driver called "scale". ********************************************************************************** ********************************************************************************** March 2003 (added the following notice for Unix installers.) ********************************************************************************** An installer on a Sun machine has run into problems installing Scale 4.4a which point up the need for some additional information that to be added to the build instructions for a Unix system. The following is an attempt at explaining what was unclear to the installer. After untarring the distribution, check the batch44.patn file in the cmds directory to make sure the environment variable, TMPDIR, is defined legimately for the machine on which scale 4.4a will be installed. After a successful install, to execute the "scale44" script, the environment variables TMPDIR and SCALE need to be defined. If SCALE is not defined, the script will not run. If TMPDIR is undefined, execution will take place in the user's home directory. The "batch44" script defines both of these variables before executing "scale44", and batch44 is created from batch44.patn. ********************************************************************************** **********************************************************************************
